How to Make Festive Flavorful Candy Cane Bagels
Activate Yeast: In a bowl, mix warm water, sugar, and yeast. Allow it to sit for 10 minutes until frothy.
Combine Dry Ingredients: In a large bowl, whisk together the flour and salt. Pour in the yeast mixture and stir until it forms a sticky dough.
Knead Dough: Transfer the dough onto a floured surface and knead for 5-10 minutes or use a stand mixer for 7 minutes until smooth and elastic.
Color Dough: Divide the dough into three pieces and mix the red, green, and optional white gel food coloring into each piece.
First Rise: Place colored dough balls into greased bowls, cover, and let rise for 1 hour or until doubled in size.
Shape Bagels: Stack flattened doughs, cut into strips, and twist into candy cane shapes.
Second Rise: Allow the shaped bagels to rise for 30 minutes.
Boil Bagels: Fill a pot with simmering water and gently boil the bagels for 1 minute on each side.
Bake Bagels: Place the bagels in a preheated oven at 350°F and bake for 38-40 minutes until golden brown.
Notes
